The first, and most obvious one, is the serial number, which uniquely identifies each engine. There are several important numbers to identify a 356 engine. When I needed what came with my car, I called 1-800-PORSCHE and provided my VIN number to customer service. The VIN number of one of them belongs to a 1969-70 911 T Targa: VIN 911011xxxx, but the engine seems to come from a 911 E or S because it has a mechanical injection system instead of carburetors.
